English club Manchester City has decided to employ Portuguese Hugo Viana as football director, succeeding Txiki Begiristain, who will leave the English club at the end of the current season, according to the British news agency (BA Media).
Begiristain has been working in this position since October 2012, after holding the same position in Barcelona from 2003 to 2010. He is widely credited with convincing his Spanish compatriot Pep Guardiola to take over the technical leadership of Manchester City.
Begiristain supported Guardiola in his launch into the world of coaching in Barcelona, where the two have a strong friendship since they teamed up with the Catalan team during the period from the early to mid-nineties of the last century.
Manchester City announced in an official statement, “We confirm that Begiristain will leave his position at the end of the current season 2024-2025.”
During the era of the duo Guardiola and Begiristain, City lived a golden period, winning the league title 6 times, including the last four in a row, and also won its first title in the Champions League, among many achievements.
The statement indicated that Texiki will leave his position after 12 years filled with titles, and will end his career after the team participates in the Club World Cup next summer, and will be succeeded by Portuguese Hugo Viana from Sporting Lisbon.
The English club added that Viana will begin his duties in the summer of 2025, but will cooperate in coordination with Texiki in the coming months to facilitate this transitional phase.
Manchester concluded its statement that it looks forward to honoring Txiki Begiristain at the end of the season in recognition of the club’s achievements under his leadership.
