Half of all on-the-spot fines issued to women are for being drunk and disorderly.

The proportion of women being handed Penalty Notices for Disorder for the offence has almost doubled since 2013 – from 25 per cent to 47 per cent in 2019.

And women overtook men for the first time, with only 41 per cent of men receiving fines for being drunk and disorderly.

An average of five women are being slapped with the £90 charge every day in England and Wales.

Statistics from the Ministry of Justice’s Women and the Criminal Justice System report also show the number of disorder penalty notices handed out by police has plummeted in the past six years.

There were 19,800 issued last year, down 77 per cent from the 84,268 handed out in 2013.

The report also revealed that twice as many women have been fined for being drunk than those fined for shoplifting.

Retail thefts of less than £100 used to be the main reason women were fined, but last year only 1,001 of the notices were issued for that – 23 per cent of the total.

In 2013, 50 per cent of women’s fines were issued for shoplifting.
