Harrison Ford provides an unexpected hint about Red Hulk’s MCU story in Captain America: Brave New World. Ford’s Red Hulk will be one of several villains in Captain America: Brave New World, where President Ross will suffer an assassination attempt and transform into the Red Hulk to fight Captain America. How Ross gained this ability is still a mystery before the Captain America sequel’s release, but Harrison Ford teases the dark forces pulling the strings behind his powerful Gamma mutate.
Speaking to Empire, MCU star Harrison Ford drops a major hint at Red Hulk’s background in Captain America: Brave New World. While discussing President Ross’ Gamma transformation, Ford mentions that Red Hulk “is being controlled,” apparently against his will. Read Ford’s comments below:
“I don’t think I want to go very much into what the mechanism is and how he is being controlled. I don’t think that there’s a choice. Didn’t feel like it at the time.”
Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk Might Be A Victim In Captain America: Brave New World
Harrison Ford’s reveal that Red Hulk is “being controlled” through a mysterious “mechanism” suggests that President Ross doesn’t transform into Red Hulk voluntarily in Captain America: Brave New World. Given that the Captain America: Brave New World trailers have obscured Samuel Sterns’ appearance, it seems like the Leader will not only be the one behind Ross’ transformation into Red Hulk, but also have full control of when Ross’ transformation kicks in.

Captain America: Brave New World director, Julius Onah, has recently commented on how Cap will fare against Red Hulk – and I’m now doubly excited.
In the comics, Thaddeus Ross joins forces with the Leader, MODOK, and Doc Samson to drain Bruce Banner’s Gamma energy and inject it into Ross’ body after the events of World War Hulk. The Leader’s team, “the Intelligencia”, kept Thaddeus Ross’ Red Hulk transformation a secret from the public by helping Ross implement a Life-Model Decoy stand-in. Apparently, Red Hulk’s origin will be drastically different in the MCU, with Samuel Sterns a.k.a. the Leader possibly injecting Thaddeus Ross with red Gamma radiation and activating his Red Hulk transformation remotely.
Red Hulk May Not Be A Villain Altogether In Captain America: Brave New World
If Harrison Ford’s President Ross really doesn’t have control over his Red Hulk transformation in Captain America: Brave New World, then he might not be a villain in the full sense of the word. Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk used to be an out-of-control monster back in Phase 1 too, but Bruce Banner soon gained control of his alter ego and turned the Hulk into an Avenger. Instead of neutralizing Red Hulk by sheer force, Captain America may stop Ross by severing the link between Red Hulk and the Leader.
