The Iraqi Minister of Youth and Sports, Adnan Darjal, faced harsh criticism on social media platforms, after the ministry chose his birthday as a national youth day in the country, as Iraqis considered the choice strange and that it did not happen in history.
The criticism came despite the ministry’s issuance of a clarification on its Facebook page, in which it indicated that what was reported by some websites and pages on communication platforms was “incorrect” information about the reasons for choosing the day designated to celebrate the National Youth Day.

The ministry said in a statement, “The choice of the day came as a complement to many activities that will start on January 22, 2022 with the establishment of a scientific exhibition of scientific innovations, and it will last for 3 days, and then on the 25th of the same month, there will be an artistic cultural event that will include plastic exhibitions and artistic events, and it will be The outputs of the two programs honor the creative youth on the following day, January 26, in a central celebration under the auspices of the Prime Minister.

Iraqis, through their accounts on the platforms, were astonished that the ministry’s choice of the National Youth Day coincided with the minister’s birthday, directing the arrows of their criticism at the person of the minister.
The media, Amer Ibrahim, said on his Twitter account, “If there is a day worthy of the youth and worthy of being the National Day of Iraqi Youth, then it is the great days of October. Pick from them what you want, for they are all lit by the blood of the revolutionaries, the martyrs and the wounded heroes,” in reference to the October 2019 demonstrations.
