“Hatem” is a Yemeni-made missile, revealed in September 2022, that belongs to the ballistic missile category. HypersonicIts range reaches 1,450 kilometers, and its warhead load reaches 500 kilograms. Its design and features are equivalent to the Iranian missile.Khyber Shakan“.
Origin and manufacturing
Yemeni-made Hatem missile revealed Houthi group In 2022, on the eighth anniversary of the September 21 Revolution, it belongs to the category of hypersonic ballistic missiles. It is a surface-to-surface missile, of which the group possesses several types with different ranges. It is the fourth generation of Badr missiles.
The Iranian missile, “Khaybar Shekan”, is one of the third generation of long-range missiles in Iran. It is distinguished by its penetration of enemy air defenses and the difficulty of targeting it due to its high speed.
It has a mass of about 4,500 kilograms, a length of 10.5 meters, and has 4 aerial blades to control its path.
In June 2023, the Houthi war media revealed for the first time the Hatem 2 missile, and announced that the group’s forces had targeted an Israeli ship in the Arabian Sea with it.
Features of Hatem missile
The missile has a long range of up to 1,450 kilometers, a payload of up to 500 kilograms, an intelligent control system, and maneuverability, making it an essential part of the Houthi strategy to threaten their opponents in the region.
It is powered by solid fuel, which provides it with the advantage of quick launch and easy storage, and makes it more stable and easy to transport. Its engine also depends on balanced and continuous combustion of fuel to produce thrust, and the missile can be prepared and launched quickly without the need to refuel it before launch.
Solid fuel is defined as a chemical mixture of oxidizing agents and combustible materials mixed in a solid form.
First use of the Hatem 2 missile
On June 25, 2024, the Houthi group announced that it had targeted the MSC Sara 5 ship in the Arabian Sea with a missile it had used for the first time.
The next day, it published a video clip showing the launch of this missile, and announced that its name was “Hatem-2,” and described it as a locally-made, solid-fuel hypersonic ballistic missile with advanced guidance capabilities and the ability to maneuver.
