The Russian Investigation Committee stated that the fugitive soldier was identified after his death through his fingerprints.
According to the Russian Investigation Commission, on September 20, 2004 the soldier left a tank training center in the village of Pishanka to the forest and did not return from it.
The investigation developed several different hypotheses for the disappearance of the soldier, including the possibility that he was killed or drowned in the aquarium for training to drive underwater tanks, none of which has been confirmed.
On December 29, last year, the body of a man was found in a house in Chita. The owner of the house said that the man was her common-law husband, but she was unable to provide any documents to him, indicating that the fire had destroyed her.
The man was not listed in the database either, and the investigators began to investigate him through fingerprints, and his fingerprints matched those of the missing soldier.
Investigations have resumed about him, and the forensic medicine confirmed that the fingerprints of the dead man and the soldier who fled 16 years ago were identical, and his mother also recognized him from the photo.
The Investigation Department concluded that “the evidence gathered in this criminal case allows a legal and logical decision to stop it in relation to the death.”
