Guadalajara, Jal. As part of its strategy sustainabilitythe company Heineken Mexico inaugurated this Wednesday the first rainwater harvesting system in the health center of the municipality of The jump, Jaliscoin coordination with state and municipal authorities.
through the program Rain Nests, the state government has installed rainwater harvesting systems both in public schools and in homes, mainly in neighborhoods with water shortage problems; however, the one in El Salto is the first one financed by the Private Initiative and the only one installed in a health center in the entire country.
This system is capable of store and treat 150,000 litersan amount that will allow the community center to live for six months solely with rainwater, without extracting liquid from any other source of supply.
“In particular, this nest of rain should benefit 1,200 people a month, including the people who work here, doctors, nurses, health personnel, but also the population that goes to the health center,” explained the director of Institutional Relations. Western region of the brewery company, Gerardo Soria.
“This system will provide access to high-quality clean water, even cleaner than the water from the network, so that this place can live for several months a year only with rainwater, which is the equivalent of 150 pipes”, commented Ana Paula Improveddirector of Rain Schools in Isla Urbana.
Elena Montes de Ocaleader of Sustainability and Circular Economy of Heineken Mexico, said that the first social project on the environmental issue for that company “is to provide access to drinking water to communities and therefore, rainwater harvesting systems allow us to bring the drinking water to the community and mitigate the consumption of water from the basins”.
He said that 60% of the company’s beer production uses renewable energy while 100% of the water used by its seven production plants in the country is treated.
For his part, Patricia Martinezdirector of the Institute for Development Planning and Management of the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara (Imeplan), said that the alliance between the government and the Private Initiative on issues such as the use of natural resources, become relevant in the face of the water crisis that is being experienced on a global scale.
In addition, he said, the Rain Nests “mean that we are not stressing other sources of supply”, and he stressed that the program was awarded at the C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Adwords Summit 2022 in the category “United in building climate resilience”.
