Heptathlon star Sophie Weissenberg is ruled out of hurdles at Paris Olympics after picking up bizarre injury in warm-up for race with medics rushing to help

German Sophie Weissenberg was ruled out of the first event in the heptathlon on Thursday morning after picking up an injury in the warm-up.

The heptathlon got underway in Paris with the 100m hurdles heats, featuring the likes of Team GB stars Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Jade O’Dowda, as well as pre-event favoutire Nafissatou Thiam.

The Team GB stars ran in the first heat, with Johnson-Thompson coming second in her push for a first Olympic medal in what is her fourth Games since debuting at London 2012.

In the second, meanwhile, Weissenberg was set to run, but ended up seemingly picking up a lower body injury of sorts as she fell to the ground in agony.

Medics then rushed to the scene to help the 26-year-old, who was eventually wheeled away from the track on a chair and left unable to compete.

With some athletes in the cool down room, TV cameras cut to the track, with Weissenberg seen face down and in tears on the track before the heat.

She was immediately consoled by five medics as a replay showed her warming up for her race by jumping over a number of hurdles.

Footage, however, showed the German taking out one hurdle and doing her best to carry on, before she stopped and realised that she had done damage to what could have been her ankle.

She she stumbled, she also appeared to roll her ankle, which resulted in her falling to the floor, before medics rushed to help.

BBC commentary could be heard saying: ‘You can imagine how bitterly disappointed she is. She seemed htio have done everything right and just in those final moments, yoiu can lose you mind a little bit.’

Weissenberg was eventually wheeled away, head in hands, as her heat got underway, which was won by Dutch star Emma Oosterwegel.
