Darvish Set for Season Debut as Padres Host Diamondbacks
SAN DIEGO – Veteran right-hander Yu Darvish will make his long-awaited 2024 debut for the San Diego Padres on Monday night. Activated from the injured list, Darvish is scheduled to start against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park.
The 38-year-old has been sidelined since spring training due to elbow inflammation in his right arm. His activation enables him to potentially make one more start before the upcoming All-Star break.
Padres manager Mike Shildt confirmed the plan following Sunday’s game against Texas. “It really comes down to the physical standpoint,” Shildt stated, emphasizing readiness over roster logistics. “We always have an open day for Yu Darvish to start.”
Darvish progressed through his rehab, including throwing two simulated games against minor league hitters in recent weeks and completing a bullpen session on Saturday.
Following significant time missed in 2024 due to separate elbow and personal issues, Darvish returned late last season. He made five starts in September, posting a solid 7-3 record and 3.31 ERA. The Japanese star delivered strong performances against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS, earning a victory in Game 2 before taking the loss in the decisive Game 5. Despite Darvish’s efforts, the Padres, after holding a 2-1 series lead, were ultimately swept by the eventual World Series champions in the final two games.
