George Springer Snubbed for All-Star Game, Named AL Player of the Week After Dominant Stretch
Despite being overlooked for the 2024 MLB All-Star Game, Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer delivered a resounding response by earning American League Player of the Week honors. The league announced the accolade Monday following a scorching seven-game stretch in which Springer propelled his team to an eight-game win streak and a homestand sweep of the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels.
The 35-year-old veteran erupted at the plate, batting .429 (12-for-28) with five home runs, 13 RBIs, nine runs scored, and a stolen base. His 1.464 OPS highlighted a week where he led MLB in RBIs, tied for first in runs and total bases (27), and ranked second in homers. Springer also recorded five consecutive multi-hit games and delivered a franchise-record seven RBIs on Canada Day, crushing two homers in a 12-5 rout of the Yankees.
This marks Springer’s sixth AL Player of the Week award in his 12-year career, including three with Toronto (2021) and two during his Houston Astros tenure. After this explosive stretch, he leads the Blue Jays with 16 home runs and 53 RBIs while boasting a .281 average and .886 OPS this season.
Springer is Toronto’s first recipient of the award this year and the first since teammate Bowden Francis in August 2024. Meanwhile, National League honors were split between Chicago Cubs first baseman Michael Busch and Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler.
With the Blue Jays surging, Springer’s recent heroics underscore his pivotal role in their postseason ambitions—and serve as a stark reminder of his All-Star-caliber impact.
