Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro is expected to miss the start of the 2025-26 NBA season after undergoing surgery on his left foot and ankle.
The procedure addresses a lingering issue that has affected Herro since the summer. The guard recently received PRP and cortisone injections to manage the discomfort and avoid surgery, but the treatments proved unsuccessful. While no official timetable for his return has been announced, the team may provide further details following the operation.
Herro, 25, is entering his seventh season with the Heat. Last season, he led the team with career-high averages of 23.9 points and 5.5 assists per game, shooting 37.5% from three-point range over 77 games. His value to the offense was significant, with Miami scoring 8.6 fewer points per possession when he was off the court. His performance earned him an NBA All-Star selection and a victory in the three-point contest.
The injury comes at a critical time, as Herro is eligible to negotiate a contract extension beginning October 1. He could sign a three-year, $149.7 million deal to add to the two years and $64 million remaining on his current contract. If the two sides do not reach an agreement by October 20, he would become eligible for a four-year, $206.9 million extension next summer.
Representatives for Herro and the Heat are reportedly scheduled to meet in early October. In May, team president Pat Riley stated that while discussions might wait, Herro is a deserving candidate for an extension.
“Pay me now or pay me later, whatever it is,” Riley said. “We’ve already talked about it. I talked about it with Tyler, and so we’ll see what happens as we plan. The numbers are getting pretty big for a lot of guys… Tyler definitely is deserving of the thought of an extension. But are we going to do it? We haven’t committed to it, but we’re going to discuss it and I’ve already talked to him about it. He’s cool.”
