A high wind warning has been issued for the greater Reno-Carson-Minden area, as well as southern Lyon, Mineral, and Mono Counties, starting 4 a.m. Sunday and lasting through 7 p.m.
The National Weather Service said southwest winds are expected to range from 25 to 40 mph, with gusts reaching up to 70 mph. Ridge wind gusts could exceed 100 mph.
Wind advisories have also been issued for the region, with southwest winds forecasted at 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph.
Blowing dust may reduce visibility to below one mile at times, particularly downwind of desert sinks and playas. Wave heights on Pyramid Lake are expected to reach between 2 and 5 feet.
The weather service warned that wind gusts could exceed 30 mph across the area, with ridge winds surpassing 80 mph in some locations.
“During the hours when these strong winds and snowfall overlap, we could see dropping visibilities, especially for travelers,” the service said.
Travelers are advised to plan their journeys early Sunday morning or anytime Monday to avoid the worst conditions.
