Homicides in Zacatecas have grown 358% since 2015

Since 2016, four different security secretaries have been appointed in Zacatecas: two of them emanating from the Armed Forces, however, violence in the state has been on the rise.

According to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), the numbers of intentional homicides have doubled in recent years. Between January and October of this 2022 there are 1,090 victims of intentional homicide in the entity; for the same period, but from 2015, 238 were registered.

In other words, between 2015 and 2022 there was a 358% increase in the number of victims.

In September 2016, retired General Froylán Carlos Cruz, at the beginning of Alejandro Tello’s administration as governor, was appointed as Secretary of State Security, however, after less than a year in office, in June 2017 he resigned from the post. .

Between 2016 and 2017, there was a 29.5% increase in the number of homicides in the state.

After the general —who was arrested in February 2022, accused of murder— Ismael Camberos Hernández was named, who until then had experience within the Federal Police.

Camberos Hernández was in the position between June 2017 and until September 2020, when he was replaced by Arturo López Bazán. The above, Governor Tello assured at the time, was in agreement with the federal government.

Between 2017 and 2020, the number of victims of intentional homicides went from 588 to 828, which meant an increase of 40.8%, according to figures from the Executive Secretariat.

With the change of state government, now in charge of David Monreal, there was a new change in the ownership of the Secretary of State Security.

In November 2021, Governor Monreal protested against retired Mexican Army General Adolfo Marín Marín. The change of Secretary of Security in Zacatecas occurred after violent confrontations between the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel were recorded in June 2021.

According to data from the Executive Secretariat, 2021 has been the year with the highest number of victims of intentional homicide with a total of 1,625, of which 1,365 were registered between January and October of that year.
