Houston Overpowers Oklahoma State for 39-17 Win

STILLWATER, Okla. — Quarterback Conner Weigman accounted for three touchdowns, leading Houston to a dominant 39-17 road victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday after overcoming an early trick play by the Cowboys.

Weigman delivered a precise performance, completing 21 of 30 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He also added a rushing score. His back-to-back touchdown passes in the second quarter were pivotal, helping Houston establish a commanding 24-10 lead by halftime.

Houston’s offense was further bolstered by Dean Connors, who scored both a rushing and a receiving touchdown, and kicker Ethan Sanchez, who was perfect on the day with four field goals. The victory helped the Cougars (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) rebound from a loss the previous week.

“It was a long week,” said Houston coach Willie Fritz. “We didn’t play well the week before. It was great we had an opportunity to come out and play better. I still don’t think we played great… but at times we played very efficiently.”

Oklahoma State (1-5, 0-3) lost its third consecutive game under interim coach Doug Meacham. The Cowboys were forced to start converted wide receiver Sam Jackson V at quarterback due to injuries to Zane Flores and Hauss Hejny. Jackson completed 7 of 16 passes for 84 yards with an interception before being replaced by Noah Walters late in the fourth quarter. Walters provided a late spark, leading a 75-yard drive capped by a 33-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Freeman.

The Cowboys scored the game’s first points on a 63-yard double-pass touchdown, as Jackson threw a lateral to receiver Shamar Rigby, who then found running back Rodney Fields for the score. However, Houston quickly erased the deficit. With the score tied 10-10, Weigman led a four-play, 67-yard drive, finding Connors for a 6-yard touchdown on a highlight-reel one-handed catch.

“Disappointed. Felt pretty good coming into this game,” Meacham said. “It’s kind of a collection of things that occur… and then it just kind of spirals.”

The win marks Houston’s best six-game start since 2021. Conversely, Oklahoma State’s struggles continue, having now lost 13 of its last 14 games and surrendered at least 38 points in its last 11 conference matchups.

Next, Houston will host Arizona on October 18, while Oklahoma State will host Cincinnati on the same day.
