When the Detroit Pistons realized that Derrick Rose and Blake Griffin were no longer going to be who they were, Sekou Doumbouya appeared as one of the faces of the franchise’s near future. The player had been in the dark since he was selected in 15th position in the 2019 draft, but the rebirth of the project could have given him the necessary space to develop his potential. However, last season’s experiment buried any expectations. Just over two years after his arrival in the league and after be cut off For the Houston Rockets, Doumbuya’s future in the NBA is far from guaranteed.
Houston has not been his first destination after Detroit, but rather briefly passed through the Brooklyn Nets before. The Guinean arrived at the big apple with Jahlil Okafor in exchange for DeAndre Jordan (later cut), money and a few second rounds. On the Nets, his physical profile seemed to fit in with a needy rotation of young, defensive muscle. But they didn’t hesitate to trade him to the Rockets along with a 2024 second round for $ 110,000. The Nets saved $ 8 million in luxury tax.
Such tricks should serve to take on the harsh reality of Doumbuya in the league. After 94 games in which he has averaged 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds in 17 minutes per night, the player does not seem to have a hole in the NBA right now.
