We all know that we should be cleaning our makeup brushes regularly, even if we don’t quite get around to it, but there’s another beauty tool that you’re probably forgetting about – with gruesome effects.

TikTok user Jessica Haizman, 26, from Geneva, Illinois, has shared a stomach-churning video reveaing why you should clean your hairbrushes every two weeks.

In the footage, she pulls out the trapped hairs and then soaks the brushes in the sink for 30 minutes, with the water instantly turning brown and murky.

After the brushes had soaked, Jessica showed how the water had gone a murky brown colour, before explaining that she ‘doesn’t dye her hair or use much product’, meaning that the dirt mostly comes off your scalp.

The post has been viewed more than 5.4 million times, racking up more than 900,000 likes and 6,000 comments.

Georgia asked her followers: ‘Have you ever cleaned your hairbrushes? And I’m not talking just pulling the hair out of your hairbrushes. We all know to do that once in a while.

‘But realistically you’re supposed to clean your hairbrushes once every two weeks.’

At the beginning of the clip, Jessica used a comb to pull out as much hair as she could from the bristles of her hairbrush.

She then placed two hairbrushes in the sink, soaking them in a mixture of half a cup of baking soda and shampoo.

Jessica worked the water into the brushes and then left them to soak for 30 minutes. She said that the water started turning ‘brown and gross’ immediately.

For the final step, Jessica thoroughly rinsed the brushes and then let them air dry.

Some users admitted they hadn’t cleaned their brushes, with one saying: ‘Oh god… I’ve had the same brush for the last 10-15 years’

Another wrote: ‘Two weeks??? I haven’t clean mine in two years…’

A third commented: ‘Wait…. im supposed to clean my hairbrush??? ehm’

Other users couldn’t believe it was suggested to clean them once every two weeks, saying they do it ‘every time they use their brush’.

One wrote: ‘So you telling me there are people who don’t clean their brushes after they use it? Like everytime, everyday? Oh..’

A second said: ‘I clean it everytime I use it so I don’t have to do this omg’

Another added: ‘no! I’m doing it daily… who’s waiting that long’

Other users said that when they had tried to clean their brushes before, the ‘squishy base’ got water stuck in it, so they had to replace the hairbrush.

One TikTok user said: ‘Okay but mine got water stuck inside of the other day so I had to throw it away. I was worried even if the water drained it would mold inside.’

Others expressed concern over the use of baking soda, which they said can be damaging for your skin and said they just use shampoo instead.

One user said: ‘Baking soda IS bad for your skin. It’s ph value is 15. But it can be rinsed of completely. Just don’t use it on your skin.’
