In Izvestia, Natalia Butriakova wrote about pushing for the law “promoting the principles of the republic” and confronting Islamist extremism in France.
The article states: The French National Assembly approved the draft law “Promoting the Principles of the Republic”, which aims to protect the country’s secular state and confront extremist Islam. The Senate is expected to approve the document in March, and it will become law by summer.
In this regard, the vice-chair of the French Senate Committee for Law and Regulation, Nathalie Goulet, who has worked for many years on the problems of de-radicalization for Izvestia, said: “We started from the principle of the equality of all in law. Any action taken with regard to Islam also includes Jews and Christians. If we ban funding from abroad, then this means that the Russians, for example, will not be able to sponsor the building of an Orthodox Church in France with this ease. “
At the same time, Senator Goulet acknowledged that this legislation “in the current climate, regardless of what is adopted, will continue to be seen as increasing Islamophobia.” This is due, in part, to the fact that most of the taboos stipulated in the law are already linked to the inappropriate practices of the Muslim community in France.
However, the main question now is how effective the new measures are in making the fight against religious extremism a fait accompli.
“We needed this law, because for two or three decades, we have been fighting jihadism and terrorism, but not their ideology,” Claude Monique, director of the European Center for Intelligence and Strategic Security, said in a conversation with Izvestia.
But one of the conditions for the effectiveness of this law, according to Monique, is the presence of allies and friends within the Muslim community. These friends can only be saved by showing that “this law is not against Islam, but rather a law against extremist ideas.” However, based on the protests that preceded the adoption of the bill by the National Assembly, it is clear that this understanding is not receiving a significant response among the Muslim community yet.
