How the telecommunications industry in Mexico will close the year

According to estimates by the Competitive Intelligence Unit (CIU) consultancy, the telecommunications sector in our country is expected to continue its upward trajectory in the remainder of this year. It is feasible that said growth will be at least 4.2% compared to 2021. Ernesto Piedras, its CEO, estimates that during the last three months of the year, around a third of the total technological consumption is carried out in Mexico.

The same consultant pointed out that revenues for the third quarter of 2022 totaled 136.3 billion pesos, which is equivalent to an annual increase of 4.5%. Most of these revenues come from the mobile telephony market (voice and data) which, as we know, continues to grow constantly. This market contributes almost 80,000 million pesos or 58% of the total. After this segment, pay television continues with 33,000 million pesos or approximately 24% of revenues.

Both markets register an intensification in the contracting and consumption of mobile and package services. These data also reflect consumption habits and the direct correlation regarding the growth in communication and entertainment in homes. On the other hand, as has been observed in several years, fixed telephony has had a drop of almost 0.2%. The consultant comments that the growing tariff competitiveness that occurs in this segment, as well as the transition of players to other markets explain the continuity of red numbers in the market.

As has been the trend in recent decades, a greater boost to the economy is expected during the last quarter of the year with a significant increase in sales of goods and services for the year-end season. The sale of devices and services during the December season is the one that generates the highest income. Ernesto Piedras comments that during the fourth quarter of the year it is estimated that the sale of smart devices will reach an amount of 23,651 million pesos.
