Capturing monsters is a handy way to speed up hunts in Monster Hunter Rise, and some quests require it. Below are the steps you’ll need to take to capture a monster.
Before you set out on a hunt, you’ll need to prepare and manage your items to be properly equipped. In order to trap a monster in Monster Hunter Rise, you need the following:
- Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps
- Tranq Bombs
How to Craft Traps
Check the Crafting List while at an Item Box to make these items. Or, check our Crafting List Page.
Once you’re in the hunt, and have tracked down the monster, you’ll need to fight it until it’s been sufficiently weakened. You’ll know when it’s the right time to attempt to capture a monster when it begins to limp away from you, towards its den. A blue icon will appear below its own icon in the upper righthand corner of the screen (which you can see in the screenshot above.)
Your Palico may tell you when it’s time to capture a monster before the blue icon has appeared!
You can then put a trap beneath it and then throw Tranq Bombs at its head to capture it. Put the trap in its path, use a Flash Bomb to prevent its escape, or, if it bypassed your trap, use a Stink Mink to lure it back to the trap!
If the monster escapes, it will be heading off to go to sleep in its den. Lay a trap under it as it sleeps and throw tranq bombs at its face. Wake it up, and it will fall into the trap and immediately be captured.
Why You Should (and Shouldn’t) Capture Monsters
Capturing a monster shaves off a few minutes from your quest, which is helpful. However, if you’re after a particular material, check your Hunter’s Notes (or that Monster’s page in this wiki if you haven’t unlocked it) to see the best way to acquire it – some are easier to get when slaying and carving, others by capturing!
Some monster materials require you to break parts – so if you haven’t broken that particular part even though it’s ready for capture, consider holding off. Alternatively, some of the rarest monster materials are easier to acquire when capturing. Other rare materials may be easier to acquire when slaying and carving, though!
Change up your method and goals depending on the material you need! Either way, you should walk away from the quest with around the same number of rewards.
