Hurricane Larry has strengthened into a Category 3 storm as it barrels towards Bermuda, potentially causing deadly rip currents along the East Coast next week.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said that Hurricane Larry, the twelfth named storm of the season, ‘is forecast to approach Bermuda during the next several days, possibly as a major hurricane.’
The hurricane has so far reached wind speeds of 125 mph and brings a risk of strong winds, heavy rainfall, and coastal flooding to Bermuda by the middle of next week, the NOAA said.
The agency said it is ‘too soon’ to determine the magnitude of the storm’s impacts on Bermuda and that officials there should monitor changes to the forecast.

‘This continues to be a very active hurricane season. For our part, the Ministry of National Security will continue to provide updated and relevant information to the public on impending storms,’ Ming said.
‘As a timely reminder, we are sharing a few helpful tips so that the public can ensure they are properly prepared in the event of a serious storm.’

The swells are first expected to reach islands in the Lesser Antilles by Sunday and the Greater Antilles, the Bahamas and Bermuda by Monday and Tuesday.
Bermuda is located about 650 miles east from Cape Hatteras, an island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The closest U.S. city to Bermuda is Charleston, which is about 880 miles away.
