The Italian and Argentinian national teams have been seeking for some time to win the services of the star Matias Sule, but the Italian Juventus midfielder apparently made his decision after he refused to represent the Azzurri national team.
Sulli holds dual Argentine and Italian citizenship, and this is what prompted Italy coach Luciano Spalletti to try to convince him to carry the national team’s colors.
Last month, Spalletti confirmed that he was closely monitoring Sule, at a time when Argentina was keen to call up the talented 20-year-old player who is eligible to play for both countries.
“I spoke with Spalletti and told him the truth, which is that I feel Argentine,” Sule said in a statement to Mediaset.
He added, “I thanked him because he wanted me, but my heart always tells me Argentina. Then I also spoke with Walter Samuel (an Argentine player), who told me that I had been temporarily called up (to the Tango national team).”
Media reports said that Sule and Valentin Castellanos (the Italian Lazio player) had been previously selected for the Argentina national team.
Sule and Castellanos are expected to be included in the Argentina national team for the World Cup qualifiers this November.
According to the TYC website, the players have been booked by Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni for matches this month.
The 20-year-old Sulli is performing at high levels in the Italian League, and is currently playing on loan with the Italian club Frosinone, where he scored 5 goals and assisted others in 9 matches.
Media reports stated that Juventus has reopened the file to renew Sule’s contract to extend it until 2028.
