The Government of the United States has not desisted from the installation of a dispute resolution panel under the rules of the T-MEC, due to the disagreements it has with Mexico’s energy policy, said a spokesman for the United States Trade Representation.
On Friday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador affirmed that the United States would no longer seek to initiate an arbitration process, after the 75-day period of consultations to avoid the panel ended, and this period was extended to seek an understanding.
However, the Trade Representation of the US government (USTR, for its acronym in English) ruled out over the weekend that the United States has already decided to withdraw from the panel. “At this time, we seek to engage constructively with Mexico through consultation and will continue to work toward a mutually acceptable resolution that addresses our (energy) concerns,” a USTR spokesperson told José Díaz Briseño, a correspondent for the daily, about the current talks.
