Joe Gomez has vowed to come back ‘better and stronger than ever’ from his knee injury that could rule the Liverpool and England defender out for the rest of the season.

The 23-year-old picked up a serious injury this week while training on international duty with Gareth Southgate‘s Three Lions and is expected to miss most of Liverpool’s Premier League title defence this term.

Gomez, who is also a doubt for next summer’s European Championships with England, described the setback as gutting but will support his Liverpool team-mates in the long-run.

The defender said on Friday: ‘The road to recovery has already begun. I’ve been here before, I know what it takes & I’ll be back better and stronger than ever.

‘I’m obviously gutted, but this is part of gods plan and I believe everything happens for a reason. I’d like to thank everyone for their well wishes and messages of support.

‘I’m focused on my recovery and supporting my team mates in any way I can. See you soon.’

The news is another devastating blow for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds, who already have a long injury list all over the pitch this season.

Liverpool already have key central defender Virgil van Dijk out for most of this season after being injured by Three Lions goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the Reds’ Merseyside Derby draw with Everton in October.

This means Joel Matip, who is struggling for fitness, will be the Reds’ only recognised centre-back in their quest to defend their Premier League crown.

Furthermore, it was announced by the Egyptian FA on Friday that Mohamed Salah has been diagnosed with coronavirus just days after attending his brother’s wedding in his home country.

England manager Southgate maintained that he could not be blamed for Gomez’s injury on international duty, with the Three Lions coach claiming the defender would have been injured anyway due to Liverpool’s hefty fixture congestion.

The centre-back had played six times in the 19 days before his injury during England training.

Southgate told ITV on Thursday: ‘I had a long chat with Jurgen. We’re all worried about the players. To lose a player like we did yesterday was really tragic.

‘Unfortunately the injury was so unique with what happened, it was a consequence of the number of games.

‘There needs to be a look at the calendar. We have to lessen the load (on the players). Wherever he would have been, there was always a chance that would have happened. We think the welfare of the players is critical.’
