Scientists tested 217 children with different IQs by asking them to generate jokes for 10 comics, and then each of their contributions was scored by a panel of scientists and cartoonists. Peers in everything, as academics believe smart people have a better understanding of humour.
Professor Ugur Sak, lead author of the study, said parents and teachers should be aware that having a child clown is a sign of their intellectual ability. The children took a Turkish intelligence test designed to measure their intelligence, called the Anadolu Sak Intelligence Scale.
Among the 217 children, 8% had below average IQ, 59% were average, 15% were above average, and 17% were rated as highly intelligent.

These comics were then awarded a humor score by 7 judges, two academics who specialize in humor sciences, and 5 cartoonists, with each child producing 10 cartoons. Those rated as highly intelligent have an average score of 92, compared to an average score of 78 for the entire study.
Children classified as below average in IQ scored an average of only 54 on the humor test.
Professor Sack explained that the end results showed that the smarter the child, the better his jokes, adding that “the higher the average intelligence, the higher the average ability to humour.”“The highly intelligent group outperformed all other groups in performance.”
He noted that parents and educators should realize that if their children or students frequently provide good humor, they are likely to have extraordinary intelligence..
