Swedish furniture giant Ikea will rent out a tiny apartment in Tokyo, Japan for only ¥99 ($0.87) per month – bills not included.

Only one unit of the 107-square-foot room is available and it is located in the Shinjuku district.

The apartment, fully furnished with the company’s furniture, will be renting out a lease from December 15 2021 until January 15 2023.

The company’s website boasts that the tiny apartment’s key lies in optimising ‘vertical space’ to ‘open up possibilities of a small room’

The retailer is accepting applications for tenants, who must be older than 20, until December 3. Potential renters can apply by signing up for an Ikea Family Profile.

Ikea’s room features a small desk and sofa and comes with an upstairs area accessible by a small ladder.

There, whoever resides will be able to relax in a bedroom area adorned by cozy decorations.

The humble abode also comes equipped with shelf space, a small wardrobe, a washing machine, kitchenette and a bathroom with a toilet and shower.

To advertise the Tiny Home campaign, Ikea created a mascot – a shark real estate agent called Blåhaj who ‘just loves small rooms’.

The retailer has even created a series of small videos featuring Blåhaj’s quest to set up the tiny apartment in advertisement.

The mascot can be seen in Ikea stores in Shibuya, Harajuku or Shinjuku and will be showing off the best in-store items for small urban spaces to shoppers until December 3.

Tiny apartments are incredibly popular with renters in their 20s and 30s in Japan.

A real estate company in the country called Spilytus manages the Ququri line of apartments which make up only 49.94 square feet.

In February 2020, most of the 1,200 of the dwellings were being rented out, SoraNews24 reports and the popularity doesn’t appear to be waning.

Tokyo is the most populated prefecture in Japan, with a population density of 6,158 persons per square kilometre according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
