ILAW opens discussion on work, trade unionism and new legislation

Summoned by the International Law Assistance (Network of Legal Assistance for Workers) to the International Conference, specialists discuss the issues that will set the agenda in the future of work, aspects that require legislation such as: work on digital platforms, teleworking, intelligence artificial and other issues related to work and technology.

The director of the ILAW Network, Jeff Vogt, during the inauguration stated that there are many challenges faced by workers, since there is still an attempt to undermine the rights of workers by confronting new forms and schemes.

More than 130 labor lawyers from 42 countries will gather in Brussels from October 7-9 for the second world conference of the International Network of Lawyers Aiding Workers ( ILAW ), where members set an ambitious agenda for defence, litigation and education.

Job misclassification is one of the fundamental problems facing delivery drivers and other app-based workers, said Ruwan Subasinghe, ILAW Network Board Member.

“When workers are classified as independent contractors, they have no guaranteed wages, paid compensation for workplace injuries or illnesses, or other fundamental employment rights. Misclassification is not new, but in the case of platform workers, it uniquely affects workers of color and migrant workers and has a huge impact on income, safety and health,” he said.

Workers’ rights attorneys are pushing for legislation to reclassify rig workers, arguing they are not independent contractors because their employment relationship creates a form of dependency, Subasinghe said.

It should be noted that Mexican lawyers also participate, since it is expected that in the coming weeks the federal government will send a reform on digital platforms to Congress.
