The pedestrian was ploughed into by a black BMW on the A548 in Pensarn, North Wales, at about 9.40pm on Saturday.

Police said the car did not stop and was later found near the crash site where three people were arrested.

Paramedics rushed the victim to Glan Clwyd Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

It is the second road tragedy in a year to come near the castle after a mother of two was killed after being smashed into by a car.

Sharn Hughes, 58, from Prestatyn, Denbighshire, died after being hit while taking a picture of the I’m a Celebrity castle last November.

Saturday’s smash was about two miles from Gwrych Castle, where the hit ITV show has been filmed over the pandemic while Australia has been shut off.

Police said the three people arrested will be interviewed later today and confirmed the senior coroner for North East Wales has been alerted.

Sergeant Raymond Williams of the Roads Policing Unit said: ‘I offer my profound condolences to the family of the pedestrian at this difficult time.

‘We are currently investigating this incident as a fatal road traffic collision and ask that any witnesses who have not already come forward to contact the police with any information or dash cam footage.

‘I am particularly keen to receive any dash-cam footage from vehicles that may have seen a black BMW travelling from Rhyl towards Pensarn between 9.30pm and 9.40pm last night (Saturday 20th November).

‘I would like to thank road users for their patience and understanding whilst the road was closed to allow our officers and a Forensic Collision Investigator to secure evidence from the scene.’

Last month an inquest into the death of Mrs Hughes heard she had suffered ‘catastrophic injuries’.

She drove ten miles from her home to Gwrych Castle in Abergele to see the lights on the set of the ITV show on November 21 last year.

Mrs Hughes and her husband Elfyn pulled into a layby on the A547 at 5pm to take a picture when a blue Volvo crashed into her. She died at the scene.

At the time, there was a 60mph limit on the A547 but it has since been lowered to a 20mph temporary restriction.

An inquest at Ruthin, North Wales heard a conclusion of death due to a road traffic collision was recorded.

Home Office pathologist Dr Brian Rodgers said she would have died instantaneously from multiple traumatic injuries.
