The Pakistan Insaf Party announced – today, Wednesday – that the party's leader and former Prime Minister Imran Khan will run in the upcoming elections in at least 3 electoral districts, at a time when political parties are preparing to run in elections on February 8.
In an interview with the media in front of Adiala Prison, where Imran Khan is imprisoned in the city of Rawalpindi, adjacent to Islamabad, a member of the Pakistani Senate from the Insaf Party, Ali Zafar, said, “We want to inform you that Imran Khan will run in the elections from at least 3 electoral districts, and we hope that the Islam Court will announce “High Abad will soon announce its ruling in the Toshakhana case with the announcement of the election schedule.”
Zafar said that the Islamabad High Court will announce its provisional ruling in the case and will also rule on the appeal of the PTI, which sought to suspend the conviction of the former prime minister in the Toshakhana case.
On August 8, the Pakistani Election Commission banned Imran Khan from running for elections or holding any government position for a period of 5 years, in addition to a 3-year prison sentence in the case known in Pakistan as “Toshakhana”, which is the “gift warehouse” in which Khan is accused. By selling or concealing details of gifts given to him while he was prime minister.
According to Pakistani law, any official in public office is prohibited from disposing of any gifts given to him while in office or concealing their details. However, in the same month, the Islamabad High Court suspended Imran’s 3-year prison sentence, but he is still in prison in other cases.
Earlier this month, the Islamabad High Court reserved its ruling on Imran Khan's petition seeking suspension of his conviction in the Toshakhana gifts case, a ruling that will determine whether he can stand in the elections.
Ali Zafar called on the members of the Insaf Party to submit their nomination papers for the upcoming elections, saying: The party will give priority to members who face prison sentences to run in the elections. At the same time, the head of the Insaf Party, Gohar Khan, confirmed that Imran will be provided with his nomination papers tomorrow, Thursday, stressing that Imran Khan He will run in these elections.
It is worth noting that Imran Khan remains imprisoned in Adiala prison in a different graft case, as well as the encryption case in which Khan is accused of divulging state secrets after showing a document to the public that he says contains a threat from the United States.
Imran Khan's government was overthrown on April 10, 2022 after a vote of no confidence in the Pakistani Parliament in light of the wave of political tension and demonstrations led by the opposition in objection to the policies of Imran Khan and the Insaf Party, especially in the economic field.
