China on Thursday urged “some American politicians” to stop using the issues in the western region of Xinjiang to interfere in its affairs.
This came after the United States called for the release of Dr. Gulshan Abbas, whose relatives say she was sentenced to 20 years in prison in China because of her family members’ human rights activities in the United States.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a press conference in Beijing that Gulshan Abbas was sentenced to prison for committing crimes of joining a terrorist organization, providing assistance to terrorist activities and “gathering a crowd of people with the aim of disturbing social order.”
The spokesman added, “We urge some politicians in the United States to respect the facts and to stop fabricating lies and defaming China.”
In a testimony organized with the US Congress’s Executive Committee on China, Gulshan Abbas’s daughter said that the family recently learned that her mother was sentenced in March of last year on terrorism charges after her disappearance in September 2018.
The daughter, Ziba Murad, described the accusations as “absurd.” Gulshan’s sister, Roshan Abbas, said the accusations were due to her and her brother Rishat Abbas’s activism in defending the rights of Uyghurs. And they both live in the United States.
