In Washington, Emmanuel Macron criticized Biden’s economic measures

Emmanuel Macron regretted this Wednesday in Washington the “super aggressive” economic measures adopted by Joe Biden to boost the US industry, during his first day of state visit.

The massive subsidies included by Biden in an economic and social law called “Inflation Reduction Law” (IRA) are “super aggressive towards our companies,” claimed the French president during a meeting with US congressmen, an AFP journalist found.

“Put yourself in my place,” he told them over lunch that he needed to focus on the climate change. And he added: “You may solve your problem, but you’ll make mine worse” with this mammoth investment program.

According to him, these measures could “kill many jobs” in Europe if there is no better transatlantic coordination.

“No one contacted me when the IRA was being debated,” he said, asking “to be respected as a good friend.”

France frowns on the economic patriotism of the Democratic president, who follows the motto “Made in the USA.”

Biden intends to promote, among others, the electric vehicle industry to promote industrial employment, the energy transition and technological competition with China.

New rules of space exploration and conquest

The French president indicated that he does not “believe for a second” that this law considered crucial by the White House will be reversed, but he advocated better synchronization between the United States and Europe.

In Washington, the “Reducing Inflation Act” is seen as a win-win project and likely to stimulate the European economy as well.

Macron’s visit began on a cordial note.

Vice President Kamala Harris called France a “vital ally of the United States” during a meeting at NASA headquarters and called for cooperation “based on democratic principles and shared values.”

For his part, Macron estimated that these “shared democratic values” must also be applied in space, which he described as “new place of international conflict“.

The French president, who will spend three days in the country, called on France and the United States to work together to restore “new rules“in conquest and space exploration.

The French president will also hold a meeting on Wednesday on civilian nuclear power and will speak to members of the French community, following a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.

The leaders will have an intimate dinner

At the end of the day, Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron will meet Joe and Jill Biden for an intimate dinner, before the formal events scheduled for Thursday at the White House.

The United States hopes that this visit will turn the page on the serious diplomatic crisis of last year.

In September 2021, the United States announced a new alliance, VICTIMSwith Australia and the United Kingdom, which infuriated France, kept on the sidelines in a key region of the world and which incidentally lost a mega-deal to sell submarines to Canberra.

Aside from trade protectionism, Macron and Biden will discuss issues like China and Ukraine on Thursday.

The two leaders will take the opportunity to express unity by committing to continue supporting kyiv in everything it needs. Both believe that negotiations with Moscow can only take place when Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski deems it appropriate.

Meanwhile, the White House has given the go-ahead to Macron’s sometimes controversial efforts to maintain dialogue with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

“We think it’s a good thing” and “we welcome President Macron’s ability” to maintain “communication with President Putin,” said a White House spokesman, John Kirby.
