Despite the fact that the federal government highlights downward figures in at least five common law crimes, including manslaughter, various forms of robbery and kidnapping, the reality is that a considerable number of crimes presented upward figures during 2021, which which caused an 11% increase in the national criminal incidence.
According to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, during 2021 at least 2 million 44,122 common law crimes were reported; 202,934 (11%) more illicit than those reported in 2020.
Among the crimes that presented the greatest increases between January and December 2020 and the same period, but in 2021, are: electoral crimes (558%), incest (100%), child trafficking (45%), the crime of falsehood (44%), breach of family assistance obligations (31%), fraud (29%), property damage (18.4%).
As well as threats (14%), dispossession (14%), extortion (10%), injuries (10.4%), home invasion (9%), drug dealing (7.2%), and corruption of minors (6.4 %).
At a press conference, Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, highlighted that one of the crimes that has decreased during 2021 was intentional homicide, which presents a decrease of 1.9% compared to 2020, this after register 28,830 investigation files in 2020 and drop to 28,262 cases in 2021.
According to the official, this crime has been concentrated in six states, which, in turn, represent 50% of the cases: Guanajuato, Baja California, Michoacán, the State of Mexico, Chihuahua and Jalisco.
“In relation to intentional homicide, already with the figures, we have a downward trend, especially with the beginning of the strengthening that was done in several states of the country and a decrease was registered already with the figures, a decrease in intentional homicide of 4%, compared to the beginning of the administration”, he said.
He asserted that theft in general has decreased by 20.4% if 2019 is taken as a reference with 2021. He pointed out that vehicle theft shows a considerable reduction (28.7%) in that period.
While common law crimes such as cattle theft, business robbery, carrier theft and home robbery, are also crimes that have been on the decline.
However, he acknowledged that the robbery of passers-by, robbery in individual public transport, extortion and rape are crimes that have been on the rise.

Although the federal official indicated that femicide fell 7% when comparing the figures for December 2021 with respect to the same month in 2020, the data from the secretariat show that said crime rose by 1.7%, when comparing the entire year of 2020 and 2021, this by registering 949 and 966 cases, respectively.
Likewise, the total number of crimes that threaten sexual freedom and safety rose by 27% between 2020 and 2021.
They are followed by equated rape (41%), sexual harassment (26%), sexual abuse (23.8%), simple rape (23%), sexual harassment (18.4%), family violence (15.3%), people (12%) and gender violence, which increased by 3.3% from 2020 to 2021.
