Rescuers used heavy machinery to remove mud blocking a tunnel in the Himalayas in India, searching for 35 missing people trapped by floods since February 7, although hopes of finding survivors dwindled.
Trapped in the tunnel in the state of Uttarakhand are among the 171 who are still missing after water and rocks destroyed a number of dams and bridges, and they are believed to have moved due to an avalanche that flooded the Doljanga river valley, where the authorities have so far found 38 bodies.
“We have not lost hope. We are working very hard throughout the night,” said Swati Baduria, chief government official in the Chamuli region.
She added, “We cannot give up, and even if we consider that there are no survivors, we must think about their families and search for the bodies of the victims. We want to recover the bodies.”
