Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has been hospitalised with Covid-19 after it was announced last week he had tested positive for the virus.

Tendulkar, who will turn 48 later this month, retired from the professional game in 2013 after notching a still unmatched 100 international centuries in a prolific 24-year career. 

The legendary batsman revealed he had contracted coronavirus on March 27 and was suffering with mild symptoms as infections continued to surge in the world’s second-most populated country.

But now he has announced he has been taken into hospital ‘as a matter of abundant precaution’.

His tweet read: ‘Thank you for your wishes and prayers. As a matter of abundant precaution under medical advice, I have been hospitalised.

‘I hope to be back home in a few days. Take care and stay safe everyone.

‘Wishing all Indians & my teammates on the 10th anniversary of our World Cup win.’

Tendulkar returned to the crease recently as captain of the India Legends team in a promotional event called the Road Safety World Series in Raipur, in the state of Chhattisgarh, which took place on March 21. 

Tendulkar posted a picture of himself with ex-team-mates Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Irfan Pathan, Rohan Gavaskar and sports scientist Vaibhav Daga on a plane just days before revealing he had contracted coronavirus.

Tendulkar had previously been quarantining at home after testing positive.

On Friday, India reported 81,466 new Covid-19 infections, the highest daily number in six months. 

Several states have been hit hard by a second wave of the coronavirus. 

Tendulkar lives in Mumbai, the capital of the Western Indian state of Maharashtra which has been the hardest hit by a resurgence in Covid-19 cases.

Maharashtra had as many as 43,183 new cases on Friday with the country’s financial hub Mumbai reporting 8,646 of them – both a record for single day infections.
