The plenary session of the General Council of the National Electoral Institute (OTHER) will meet tomorrow, Thursday, December 30, to comply with the order of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), and continue with the organization of the process of revocation of mandate.
At the proposal of the president counselor, Lorenzo Córdova Vianello, the draft Agreement of the General Council of the National Electoral Institute will be submitted to the plenary consideration by which, in compliance with the agreements issued by the Recess Commission of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation in incidents of suspension of Controversies Constitutional 224/2021 and 226/2021, the organization of the mandate revocation process continues.
Initially, the National Electoral Institute explained that it does not have the 3,830 million pesos required to carry out the organization and conduct of the consultation on the revocation of mandate, since the Chamber of Deputies gave it a cut of 4,913 million pesos in budget requested for 2022. After carrying out some adjustments to its budget for next year, the INE only has 1,503 million pesos to carry out that exercise, which is why it filed a constitutional controversy in the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.
On December 22, the Recess Commission of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation admitted for processing the constitutional controversy promoted by the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Sergio Gutiérrez Luna, against the agreement of the National Electoral Institute (OTHER) that decided to postpone the execution of the Mandate Revocation process, and ordered that institute to reinstate the procedure.
That is why this Thursday the plenary session of the General Council will be held, in order to comply with what is ordered by the SCJN.
The plenary session will take place one day after the deputy Sergio Gutiérrez Luna announced that he had withdrawn the complaint he filed with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) against six directors of the INE who voted in favor of the postponement of activities of the revocation of mandate. The federal legislator made this announcement minutes after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in his morning conference this Thursday, revealed that Gutiérrez Luna had made that decision.
The counselor of the INE, Ciro Murayama, assured that Gutiérrez’s decision was due to the social pressure generated by the complaint presented by him.
“The presidency of the Chamber of Deputies stops its intention to criminally prosecute INE advisers. Goodness. He does so after broad public disapproval of his claim, which confirms that it was a strictly political decision. And, in addition, of an authoritarian court ”, he maintained.
The president of the INE, Lorenzo Córdova, said that the defense of freedoms is fundamental in the current political and social context that the country is experiencing.
“Faced with the authoritarian impulses that threaten democracy, the defense of the freedoms and values that sustain it by society (academics, journalists, opinion formers, civil associations, trade union organizations, etc.) is fundamental,” he said .
