Inside the 'best' home in Tempe, Sydney renovated by Seemann Rush architects

Behind the basic brick front of this 1920s home is a spectacular tropical bungalow – complete with a dream kitchen, a garden oasis and an ensuite bedroom that takes up an entire floor

  • A bungalow built in the 1920s has been transformed into an epic family home with the original shell still intact
  • The house in Sydney’s inner-west was given a new lease of life in a major renovation completed in early 2020
  • Local architects Seemann Rush gutted the interior to create a four-bedroom built around a central pavilion
  • Standout features include a chef’s kitchen, enormous open-plan living room and two-storey rear extension

A brick bungalow built in the 1920s has been transformed into a spectacular family home with the original shell intact and a whole new world through the front door.

The dated California-style cottage in Tempe, in Sydney’s inner-west, was given a new lease of life in a renovation completed by architects Seemann Rush in early 2020, which stripped practically everything except the façade.

The result of the extensive redesign, which left the house unrecognisable from the condition it was last bought in in 2015, is a stunning four-bedroom built around a central pavilion that has been described as the finest home in the 2044 postcode.

Listing agent Louise Mitchell, who is overseeing the sale of the house through Marrickville realtors The Property Sellers, told Daily Mail Australia it is ‘the suburb’s best home’.

Original features such as the preserved heritage front, corniced ceilings and stained glass windows fitted in the 1920s are what Ms Mitchell said makes it a standout that is sure to sell fast.

‘The design just marries old and new together really beautifully,’ she said.

‘It’s a step above the rest and there would not be many that come close to the standard seen here.’

All four bedrooms are flooded with natural light and come with spacious built-in wardrobes, with potential to turn one into a large home office or rumpus room for kids.

The master – which has its own ensuite decorated in a tropical inspired theme – is so large it covers the entire second storey, while one of the downstairs bedrooms opens onto a private verandah.

While Ms Mitchell declined to disclose the total cost of the renovation, it’s clear that no expense has been spared.

She expects the house to draw interest from young professionals at an auction scheduled for March 13, with guide price set at $1.895million (AUD).

That’s $640,000 more than the average cost of a family home in Tempe which was $1.255million in 2020, according to a profile of the suburb by realestate.com.au.
