GREENSBORO, N.C. (WKRC) – An Instacart shopper allegedly shot and killed a police officer in a supermarket while he was buying groceries for a customer.
Sheila Gonzalez told local outlet WFMY that she had placed an order for groceries through Instacart and monitored the app as her assigned shopper, 34-year-old Tarell McMillan, purchased her groceries.
“He started doing the shopping,” she said. “He was nearly finished.”
Suddenly the app told Gonzalez her order had been reassigned to another shopper. She was confused until a news alert on her phone mentioned a shooting at the same Food Lion that McMillan was shopping at.
According to a press release from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation obtained by WFMY, an unnamed person called 911 at around 11 a.m. on Dec. 23 to report a suspicious person who they believed was armed at the Food Lion.
Officer Michael Horan was the first officer to respond to the call and approached McMillan upon entering the store, according to the release. The two had a “brief struggle” before McMillan pulled out a gun and shot the officer, authorities said.
“The officer did not have time to draw or fire his weapon,” the release said.
McMillan fled the grocery store in a car, but was found at 1 p.m. on the same day. He refused to stop his car when prompted, leading to a chase that ended in a PIT maneuver.
Gonzalez said after reading what had happened she was afraid for her family’s safety.
“It scared me foremost when you hear about the officer who didn’t have a chance to draw his weapon,” she told WFMY. “Immediately my mind went to if he’s willing to shoot an officer he’s obviously someone who’s dangerous and violent and he was on his way to my home. It scared me because we have children.”
The Greensboro Police Department commemorated Officer Horan on their social media and Instacart issued a statement condemning the “truly incomprehensible” violence and said McMillan was removed from the app.
