European Council President Charles Michel has proposed setting up a special European institute to train imams against an “ideology of hatred.”
He was speaking in Vienna after visiting a tribute to the victims of last week’s terrorist attack in the city, claimed by the so-called Islamic State group.
Days earlier, stabbings that killed three people in the French city of Nice were also deemed to be terror-related.
During a meeting hosted by Austrian chancellor Sebastian Kurz to discuss tackling terrorism, Michel said he believes a school for imams could help “fight against extremist ideologies, violent extremism, messages of hatred, messages of rejection that feed these terrorist actions.”.
