The United States will only invite to the Summit of the Americas those countries that show their “commitment to democracy,” official sources reported Thursday.
The commitment to “democracy will be a key factor in deciding who will be invited and who will not be invited,” assured U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Brian Nichols, in a telephone press conference when asked if Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba will be invited to the summit.
The White House, the official explained, is in charge of deciding to which of the 35 countries of the region to extend the invitation to the summit, which traditionally gathers the leaders of the continent and which this year will take place in Los Angeles.
