IP of Quintana Roo requests gradual application of vacation reform

Cancun, QR. The organization Entrepreneurs for Quintana Roo expressed its support for the Labor Reform that extends the minimum vacation period from six to 12 days; however, they consider it necessary to make adjustments in the case of micro, medium and small enterprises (MSMEs), which represent 70% of the national economy, so that they can apply it gradually.

“We believe that the reform will be of great benefit to workers. Its gradual application will also reduce the economic impact that it could generate, especially for small and medium-sized companies,” said Sergio León, director of the organization.

The businessman assured that this reform will put Mexico one step closer to a progressive and internationally competitive work culture, since work stress causes losses of between 4 and 6% of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

However, he said, it is important to recognize that 70% of the national economy, as well as job creation, comes from MSMEs that have a workforce of between five and 15 employees, so applying this labor reform could represent a strong both economic and operational impact for this type of company.

“Employers for Quintana Roo agree that the application of this reform must be gradual in order to grant an adaptation period for the companies that could be most affected,” he insisted.

Just on November 3, the Senate of the Republic unanimously approved the opinion on decent vacations. Said bill amends articles 76 and 78 of the Federal Labor Law, to extend the annual vacation period for workers from six to 12 days.

The opinion, which was approved with 89 votes in favor and sent to the Chamber of Deputies, establishes that working people, who have more than one year of service, will enjoy an annual paid vacation period, which in no case may be less than to 12 business days.

It adds that this vacation period will increase by two business days, up to 20, for each subsequent year of service; and specifies that workers must enjoy, continuously, at least 12 days of vacation.
