Mariana Belinkaya wrote, in “Kommersant”, about the intransigence of the United States and Iran in their positions on the “nuclear deal”, so what next?
The article reads: Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said his “last word”: Tehran will not return to compliance with the “nuclear deal” unless Washington lifts the unilateral sanctions. For his part, US President Joe Biden made it clear that the lifting of sanctions on Iran would not take place until the Iranians stopped enriching uranium. The statements were exchanged exactly two weeks before the end of the deadline issued by Tehran: either the sanctions were lifted or its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency reduced.
As Bloomberg noted, the Biden team’s strategy with regard to Tehran has not been fully developed. Just two weeks later, a special envoy for Iran was appointed. So far, according to the agency, Washington is studying options on how to reduce the financial burden on Iran without lifting the main sanctions, foremost among which is the oil embargo.
In this regard, Adlan Margiev, a researcher on Iranian affairs at the Moscow State Institute for International Relations, told “Kommersant”: “As long as the talks between Iran and the United States are going through journalists, we will not see progress in returning to the JCPOA. It was the principle of division.” Steps and reciprocity, which Russia proposed on the eve of previous negotiations on the JCPOA, made it possible to find solutions to this situation. Now, that the negotiators have concluded a 154-page agreement, it is necessary to recall this principle, and to start a dialogue that allows, behind Closed doors, with a phased work plan.
Margayev also drew attention to what the Iranian Parliament Speaker, Muhammad Baqer Qalibaf, said that Iran is putting the United States in front of a choice of what it should do, but it itself is prepared for any scenario.
