Iranian television said that at least ten climbers were killed and others were missing in the mountains north of the capital, Tehran, after heavy snowfall, and a ship crew of seven was also missing after storms in the Gulf.
The television added that the fate of a number of climbers is still unknown since the death of two climbers was announced on Friday, and that the number of missing persons increased as the authorities received reports from families concerned about their children.
The television quoted Mehdi Valibor, head of emergency operations in the Iranian Red Crescent, as saying that nine people died in the mountainous region and one died in hospital after his rescue.
In another incident, the semi-official Iranian Student News Agency reported that Iranian maritime authorities are searching for seven crew members of an Iranian transport ship that capsized in the turbulent Gulf waters on Friday.
“We are trying to find the missing by mobilizing all our facilities and forces and informing passing ships and maritime search and rescue centers in the Sultanate of Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan,” the agency quoted Ismail Makizadeh, deputy head of the Ports and Maritime Organization in the region.
