Under the above heading, Mariana Belinkaya, in “Kommersant”, wrote about Tehran awaiting indications from the new White House administration regarding the nuclear deal, while displaying strength and stubbornness at the same time.
The article read: Iranian authorities were among those who literally counted the seconds remaining until the end of Donald Trump’s presidency. Finally, Tehran added it to its list of sanctions, along with the almost completely outgoing US administration, and took advantage of the transition period in Washington, to demonstrate the strength of its weapons, as it managed this week to hold its fourth maneuvers since the beginning of the year.
How Tehran’s relations with the new administration will evolve is one of the most interesting questions on the Biden team’s foreign policy agenda.
On Tuesday, the candidate for the post of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken indicated, in his speech to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, that the decision to return Washington to the “nuclear agreement” will not be quick.
According to him, the new US administration has taken into consideration the position of the American allies in the Middle East, namely the Arab Gulf states, as well as Israel. Now, it is not just a matter of the United States returning to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, but of expanding the “nuclear deal.”
In this regard, Maxim Sochkov, a senior researcher in the International Operations Analysis Laboratory at the Moscow State Institute for International Relations, told Kommersant: “In Biden’s team, many people who had previously worked on the Iranian file under Barack Obama met. They are negotiators and diplomats with experience. “Returning to the deal will be Biden’s main agenda in the Middle East, at least at the beginning of his rule, although the potential contradictions between Iran and the United States are practically visible.”
At the same time, Tehran continues to oppose changes to the parameters of the “nuclear deal”. In addition, during the past few days, the Iranians have repeatedly stressed that their main condition for fulfilling their obligations under the JCPOA is the lifting of sanctions on Iran, without which the Iranians do not need a “nuclear deal.”
