The Ministerial Council for National Security called for Iraq To tighten preventive measures to avoid any possible border breach or security threat, and called for tightening security checks on imports and dealing with reliable companies before importing electronic devices. This came after two waves of deadly bombings in Lebanon on Tuesday and Wednesday that included thousands of communication devices used by elements in Hezbollah.
Israel has not officially commented on the bombings, which killed 14 people and injured more than 450 in a new wave of explosions targeting wireless communication devices in Lebanon on Wednesday. This comes a day after similar simultaneous explosions of wireless communication devices of the pager type, which led to the death of 12 people and the injury of 2,800.
The Iraqi Prime Minister headed Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani Yesterday, the National Security Ministerial Council met. A government statement said that the council listened to a briefing on developments in Lebanon and the continuation of sending medical and humanitarian aid to treat the injured.
Iraq has begun sending large shipments of humanitarian aid, medicines and high-level medical teams to provide support to the Lebanese people in the wake of the bombings that took place in various parts of the country.
The bombing of Hezbollah's communications devices in Lebanon has renewed fears of an escalation in the region against the backdrop of the ongoing, devastating Israeli war in the Gaza Strip.
Iraq is not immune to regional turmoil. In late 2023, dozens of drone and missile strikes in Iraq and neighboring Syria targeted American soldiers as part of the international coalition to combat the Islamic State, led by Washington.
These strikes were claimed by Iraqi armed factions loyal to Iran, against the backdrop of Washington's support for Israel in the Gaza war and to demand the departure of foreign forces from Iraq.
The United States has repeatedly responded to these attacks by launching air strikes targeting faction headquarters in Syria and Iraq.
