The Government of Israel imposed a ban on the sale of seafood from the Mediterranean, due to the mysterious oil spill that resulted in the pollution of a larger part of the coastline recently.
Yesterday, Wednesday, the Ministry of Health announced that this ban on fish and other marine animals sold for consumption will take effect immediately and until further notice, indicating that this is a precaution.
The government previously advised citizens to refrain from visiting the beaches bordering the Mediterranean Sea, after a number of volunteers were injured during efforts to clean the coastline from the effects of tens of tons of tar spilling off the coast of the country.
Mystery still surrounds the cause of the leak, which was detected about 50 km from the coast, and 10 ships were present in this area at the time.
The leak is believed to have caused the death of many marine animals, including a whale that was discovered on the coast a week ago.
