Occupied Jerusalem- Israeli analysts agreed that the appointment of Yahya Sinwar Head of the Political Bureau ofHamas Successor to the martyr Ismail Haniyeh It is a painful blow to Israel and poses new challenges to the Palestinian national liberation project that it sought to abort through the war on Gaza strip.
Analysts suggested that the appointment of Sinwar reflects Hamas' strategy of perpetuating the conflict with Israel, which carries within it more hardline positions and adherence to Palestinian principles and constants that reject bargaining or making any concessions, and returning the conflict to square one. The Nakba 1948.
Some readings considered the choice of Sinwar and Hamas's future strategy with regard to everything related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as a shuffling of the cards in the Middle East, and a blow to what Israel calls the “moderate axis,” as well as a setback for the regimes that insist on normalizing relations with Tel Aviv.
Analysts agreed that the appointment of Sinwar at the top of the pyramid in the largest Palestinian resistance faction carries many messages and indications, indicating that Hamas has appointed a stubborn leader who will not make any concessions, and that the movement will not compromise on disarming the resistance, and confirming that the Gaza Strip on the day after the war will remain under its control.
Class unity
In turn, Professor Kobi Michael, a researcher at the Mishgav Institute for National Security and Zionist Strategy, says, “In one way or another, Sinwar’s election to the position can be understood as a kind of recognition and appreciation for the movement’s leadership in the Gaza Strip for its leadership of the struggle and fighting, and for the heavy price it paid.”
At the same time, Michael adds that the choice, which was announced so soon after Haniyeh's assassination, demonstrates the ability to operate that Hamas still has, “and this move is likely to carry a very important message to the Palestinians, Israel and the world that Hamas is still strong,” he said.
He explained in his assessment of the situation that he published on the Walla website that the unanimous selection of Sinwar and with such speed reflects the unity of the ranks in Hamas, which sends messages that the movement is strong and unified and free of rivalries, disputes, camps and movements.
He said that the selection of Sinwar is further evidence of Hamas's behavior as a hierarchical and disciplined organization, “even in the face of severe disagreements, it knows how to rally and unite its ranks in the name of the cause and towards achieving the goal.”
The Israeli researcher estimates that Sinwar will be able to consolidate his position as the movement’s leader and Hamas’ position as an alternative to Fatah in the Palestinian street, and he will be on his way to taking over… Palestinian Authority AndPalestine's libiration organisation.
He believes that thanks to Sinwar's firm stance, adherence to Palestinian national constants, and failure to make concessions in the conflict, Israel will not succeed in eliminating the movement's rule in the Gaza Strip, and Hamas will return to its role as the sovereign in the Strip.
Netanyahu's failure
Under the title “Sinwar as President… Netanyahu is Guilty,” Amir Ben David, political affairs editor at the Zman Yisrael website, wrote an article in which he criticized the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his management of the war, and his failure to achieve its goals and return the kidnapped soldiers, saying that “Netanyahu’s failure contributed to strengthening and empowering Sinwar.”
The Israeli writer pointed out that the decision to appoint Sinwar as head of the political bureau is an expression of confidence in him and in the established leadership in the Gaza Strip, and aims to send a message to Israel, the United States, and the Arab world saying that Sinwar alone will dictate the terms of the future deal to release the kidnapped and end the war.
Palestinian and Middle East affairs specialist Avi Issacharoff said that Hamas's choice of Sinwar after Haniyeh reflects the path Hamas chose to take at the beginning of “Al-Aqsa Flood“It also symbolizes the movement's strategy in light of the war, its positions on the future of the conflict, and Hamas' adoption of Sinwar's vision, agenda, and ideology.
In an article in Yedioth Ahronoth, Issacharoff explained that this choice actually represents the submission of the movement’s entire political bureau to Sinwar, saying that “by choosing such a person, Hamas is ideologically racing in a more extreme and hardline direction in everything related to the future of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
Jihad thought
For his part, Middle East geopolitics researcher Dayan Shmuel Elmaz says, “With this move, Hamas shows its commitment to the idea of jihad as the core of the organisation’s ideology, and reveals its strategy. Sinwar is the figure most closely linked to the surprise attack on October 7.”
The Israeli researcher adds in an article in Globes that Sinwar's election is a “clear message to Israel and moderate Arab countries that a political settlement cannot be reached with Hamas. Moreover, his election poses a challenge to Israel in its relationship with the Palestinian Authority and the normalizing Arab and Islamic countries.”
Gershon Baskin, founder and head of the Israel-Palestine Center for Research and Information, said Sinwar's selection was a “severe blow” to those who imagined Hamas might be willing to step aside and allow others to rule Gaza after the war.
“I understand that Sinwar was opposed to any discussion of disarmament, and he apparently viewed Hezbollah as a model for Hamas in Gaza,” Baskin wrote in a comment on social media. “His appointment is a painful blow to the moderate neighbors who imagined that Hamas had learned its lesson from its military losses and the physical destruction that Israel caused in Gaza.”
The Israeli writer added that if Hamas's power and position are strengthened during Sinwar's era, the Palestinians will view Sinwar as “the person who brought them back to the memory of the Nakba, and that his selection is a message to the Palestinian people and the world that they must fight to the death and not make any concessions.”
