Israeli writer Carmela Cohen Shlomi compared what she considered to be the miserable reality that Israel is currently experiencing under the leadership of… NetanyahuAnd the reality that she lived during the era Rabin (Formerly Prime Minister) She explained that Netanyahu and his government disdain the lives of prisoners.
She said – in her article entitled “The Angel of Destruction Here and There” published by the newspaper “Zaman Israel” – that the anniversary of Rabin’s assassination passed in great silence, wondering why this occasion was ignored at the political and popular levels.
The writer spoke about the difference between Netanyahu and Rabin indicating a profound moral shift, as the latter “embodied responsibility and commitment to values,” while Netanyahu represents the image of a selfish leader who seeks to remain in power at any cost, forgetting the interests of the people and the values of the state.
Charisma without morals
Shlomi believes that the phenomenon of the rise of authoritarian leaders is not limited to Israel, but has been repeated in many countries around the world.
She pointed out that the masses have become inclined to elect leaders who enjoy charisma but lack political morals, and cling to power by fanning disputes and inflammatory speeches, adding that this phenomenon is clearly evident in Israel, where Netanyahu was repeatedly elected despite widespread criticism of his policies.
The writer stated that a number of political leaders describe Netanyahu as the “angel of ruin,” as he exploits his influence to perpetuate a state of division in society, and works to protect his narrow interests, ignoring the people’s aspirations and real needs.
Sharp divisions
The article considered that the political and security crises facing Israel are worsening as a result of Netanyahu’s policies. At a time when tensions are escalating on various security fronts, the Prime Minister is taking decisions that exacerbate social divisions, such as dismissing Defense Minister Yoav Galant “in response to the demands of the extremist parties” and a desire to Satisfying religious forces at the expense of civil values and public interests.
He added that Netanyahu’s policies have led to a decline in the values of justice and equality in society, as government appointments and fateful decisions have become linked to narrow interests, which enhances the state of popular discontent.
According to Shlomi, Netanyahu’s continued power is causing great psychological damage to Israelis who see his government as a symbol of corruption and tyranny, as his policies have deepened the state of division in society, and many feel frustrated with the leadership that they see as serving their interests and ignoring their daily suffering.
She pointed out that the scenes of repeated protests against the government do not affect Netanyahu, who considers himself immune to popular anger, and the families of the prisoners and dead soldiers see that his government is reckless with the fate of their children.
She also said that media and political opposition to Netanyahu’s policies has become limited, as his influence also includes the media and political elites, by relying on a network of alliances and loyalists who promote his policies and protect him from criticism.
