El Fasher- The city of El Fasher, the capital of the Darfur region in western Sudan, is one of the oldest cities Darfur Historically and politically, it forms the social cohesion of all tribal components in Sudan, plays an influential role in political decision-making, and represents the main headquarters of the region’s governments throughout the ages.
These days, the city is witnessing a state of panic and fear as a result of the continuous statements and threats of attack by the Rapid Support Forces. All eyes are drawn to it as it is the only city outside the control of these forces, which declared control over 80% of the Darfur region, after the fall of the military bases in the cities of El Geneina andNyala Wazalanji and Zain.
These developments increased the suffering of residents who fled their homes outside the city, while others took refuge in the safer southern neighborhoods far from the military front line.
Military reinforcements
Since the outbreak of war in the country, the combined force of the armed struggle movements has pushed for large military reinforcements in various neighborhoods and main streets, to limit any movements of the Rapid Support Forces, which always initiate the attack. It has also greatly strengthened its forces these days, amid anticipation and waiting for armed confrontations to occur. At any moment.
The official spokesman for the joint force, Major Ahmed Hussein Mustafa, told Al Jazeera Net, “The point of disagreement between the Rapid Support and the armed struggle movements, which recently announced a departure from the principle of neutrality, lies in their insistence on attacking the cities of Al-Daein and Al-Fasher.”
Mustafa added, “These two cities have become areas to shelter large numbers of displaced people, and the attack on them means that Darfur will be completely out of service.”
He pointed out that the Rapid Support Forces’ targeting of civilians in this war exceeded the number of military casualties, and that the armed struggle movements had been largely silent about these violations, and declared a neutral position in the war, “not out of fear, but rather knowledge of the consequences of the reality on the ground, and the hope that they would not enter it under force.”
Military control map
There are elements of the Rapid Support Forces in the eastern neighborhoods of the city of El Fasher, and at the entrance to the national road linking it to the capital, Khartoum, while the forces of the armed struggle movements are deployed in the heart of the state capital, especially in the markets, main roads, and the headquarters of international organizations and bodies, next to the western and southern neighborhoods of The city, while the army is located at the military base in the center of the city.
Given the situation on the ground, the armed struggle movements represent the major force, possess columns of combat vehicles, and rely on fertile ground of fighters as they are sons of the state.
Over the past few days, there have been no direct armed confrontations between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in El Fasher, nor have they occurred with the armed struggle movements that have set red lines that cannot be entered, while the process of launching drones by the Rapid Support is still continuing, which forces a response. upon them by the army.
Researcher in political sociology, Dr. Muhammad Suleiman Hamid Atem, says, “The armed struggle movements will not allow the Rapid Support to enter the city of El Fasher, and if they try, they will enter into violent confrontations with them, which may lead to a civil war.” He appealed to both sides of the conflict to resort to the voice of reason and move toward peace. And stability.
Provide quick support
The Rapid Support Forces said that on Tuesday they took control of the city of El Daein, the capital of East Darfur state, and it is the fourth capital of the five states of the region, which has been under the control of the Rapid Support Forces since late last October.
According to local reports, the army forces withdrew from the command of the 20th Division after arrangements were made through mediation led by the leader of the Rizeigat tribe, Mahmoud Musa Madibo, to spare Al-Daein the danger of military confrontations between the two parties.
A citizen of Al-Daein told Al-Jazeera Net, “The Rapid Support Forces were able to control the military base located on the outskirts of the city, with military aircraft intervening on Tuesday morning.” He pointed out that there were a number of deaths and injuries among civilians, including women and children, while the city’s civil administration announced via loudspeakers the reopening of the city’s market as of Wednesday.
The Rapid Support Forces recently took control of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur state, and El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state.
A citizen of Nyala revealed to Al Jazeera Net that life is gradually returning to the city, with an almost complete absence of residents who have completely abandoned the city since the fighting intensified there, amid an almost complete absence of water and health services, all of whose equipment has been looted.
According to a statement issued by the joint force of the armed struggle movements, seen by Al Jazeera Net, a meeting brought together representatives of the struggle movements with the second commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Abdul Rahim Dagalo, in a village in North Darfur early last week.
According to the statement, the meeting came at the invitation of the Rapid Support Party, with the aim of discussing the issue of stopping the war in the remaining cities of Darfur, specifically the cities of El Daein and El Fasher (before the fall of El Daein), taking into account that they are considered shelter cities for the displaced and those fleeing the war in the various cities and states of Darfur.
The statement said, “The leadership of the joint force presented a paper to the Rapid Support, with justifications for preventing war in the two cities, but it was rejected by the Rapid Support, which insisted on continuing the war, and thus the meeting ended without an agreement.”
