The “Workshop” program discussed many things that must be present in a comedy work – other than writing – as the harmony between these things affects the viewers’ reception of the work, including the method of final montage of the work and the visual and audio effects.
According to Saudi director Ali Al-Kalthami, directing comedies is considered one of the most difficult works, because some things that the audience does not pay attention to, such as lens size and editing, play decisive roles in the final form.
Al-Kalthami believes that some audiences believe that everything presented is improvisation, and do not realize the true effort made by the work team to reach the final version.
As for comedian Shaker Al-Sharif, he said that the joke has important details, including facial expressions and voice, pointing out that wit alone is not enough to produce a good comedy.
In addition, a large part of the laughter comes from the choice of the photography lens and the movement accompanying the lens, and also from the music used in the work and the harmony between it and the image, says Egyptian director and editor Wael Farag.
Faraj pointed out that montage is “a type of writing” and not just a process of assembling images and sounds, because it is primarily based on putting everything in its correct place and at the correct time.
In turn, comedian and screenwriter Ayman Wattar pointed out the importance of getting into the story directly from the first moment, while relying on “seriousness to make you laugh.”
