Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio indicated that there are three thousand refugees trapped in the ice in Bosnia, in a “disturbing picture of what is happening at the gates of Europe.”
“We are, in fact, closely following the situation that arose after the closure of the Liga reception camp between Bosnia and Croatia. The humanitarian situation of migrants and asylum seekers currently deprived of residence and access to basic services raises our concern,” Di Maio added in a message published in La Stampa today.
He also indicated that his country has allocated up to 500 thousand euros for the Red Cross, which works in the field there.
Emphasizing the need for a unified response to the issue of immigration, he said, “We cannot stand by idly. Three thousand people suffer from terror on Christmas days. They live barefoot, wrapped in old blankets, and do not have the strength to even shiver … This is not life.”
He continued, “We appeal to the Bosnian authorities to find a very urgent solution. But also, the European Union bears an enormous moral responsibility for the suffering of refugees there.”
He added, “We asked the European Union Commission to take measures to alleviate the suffering of the refugees. It is unreasonable for them to be forced in this cold and harsh winter to the suffering and pain of the struggle for survival.”
