An Italian newspaper has sparked rage on social media after they used a picture of Kamala Harris wearing a Native American feathered headdress in their front page.
Il Tempo, a center right outlet, used the presidential candidate’s inflammatory image along the title, ‘Hunt for the white man’ – referencing Harris’ search for a running mate.
Social media users have been slamming the image as racist, and pointing out that Harris has no native American descendance; her father is Jamaican and her mother from India.
The paper’s editor-in-chief Tommaso Cerno, however, has defended the cover, saying he chose the headdress because because ‘redskins [sic] are the symbol par excellence of all America’s minorities.
The editor added that the ‘Italian left’ is wrongly accusing him of confusing Harris’ ethnicity.

Cerno’s explanation has not been enough for many critics, who have continued speaking against the front paper choice.
One X user said: ‘How racial tropes work: ignorance runs so deep that Italy’s rightwing newspaper Il Tempo ignores that Kamala Harris ’s mother was from Madras, India. Kamala is portrayed on frontpage as Native Indian under the title “white manhunt.”‘
Meanwhile an Italian X user said: ‘There are no more words to comment on the level reached by these people.’
Harris was born and raised in Oakland, California.
Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a biomedical scientist and Indian native. She died in 2009. Her father Donald is an 82-year-old economist.

Il Tempo’s front cover was about Harris’ selection for her running mate, as the current VP was deciding between several white male politicians.
On Tuesday, Harris announced her choice: Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
Harris introduced the governor to the nation at a raucous rally in battleground Pennsylvania that was aimed at building momentum for the newly minted Democratic presidential ticket in the sprint toward Election Day.
‘He’s the kind of person who makes people feel like they belong and then inspires them to dream big. … That’s the kind of vice president America deserves,’ Harris said while standing with Walz in Philadelphia.

Taking the microphone after Harris, Walz revved up the crowd for the rigorous campaign to come. ‘We’ve got 91 days. My God, that’s easy. We’ll sleep when we’re dead,’ he said.
The remarks reflected the urgency of the moment, with Harris tapping Walz for the ticket during one of the most turbulent periods in modern American politics.
Republicans have rallied around former President Donald Trump after he was targeted in an attempted assassination in July.
Just days later, President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign, forcing Harris to scramble to unify Democrats and decide on a running mate over a breakneck two-week stretch.
